At Casa Velha do Palheiro, we believe that sustainability is essential for preserving the environment and the well-being of future generations. We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our activities, promoting responsible management of natural resources, and encouraging our employees and guests to adopt sustainable practices.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT OBJECTIVESCertification and Commitment to Sustainability
Casa Velha do Palheiro aims to maintain the international Green Key (GK) certification obtained in 2024, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability, including socioeconomic impacts and the well-being of guests and employees.
Energy Efficiency
We are committed to reducing energy consumption through:
• Raising employee awareness about energy conservation.
• Informing guests about the Green Key program and good environmental practices.
• Acquiring efficient equipment (energy class A).
• Using LED lamps and controlling outdoor lighting with timers.
Sustainable Water Management
Casa Velha do Palheiro adopts measures to minimize water consumption without compromising guest comfort and safety:
• Installing water-saving devices.
• Using rainwater for garden irrigation.
• Using heat pumps and solar panels for water heating.
Waste Reduction and Recycling
We are committed to minimising waste production and promoting proper separation:
• Separating paper, plastic, glass, and non-recyclable waste for guests.
• Adding organic waste to the separation process for employees.
Responsible Use of Chemical Products
We prioritise the use of cleaning products and amenities with environmental certification, reducing the impact on the local ecosystem.
Carbon Offsetting and Reforestation
Casa Velha do Palheiro has established a partnership with Greener Act to support a reforestation project in the Palheiro Nature Estate.
• Over 400 trees will be planted, creating a green labyrinth capable of offsetting about 10 tons of carbon per year.
• The labyrinth will be open to guests and visitors, who contribute to this project by purchasing trees on the Greener Act platform.
• The project is equivalent to offsetting 20 round trips between Funchal and Lisbon.
Casa Velha do Palheiro believes that together, we can create a lasting positive impact on the island of Madeira and the planet.
